One line that has always stuck with me is “God does not build in straight lines” (not that I’m a religious type) when used in reference to observing the natural world. The “built in” need for Humans to expand and grow has seen our population boom and with it comes structures and buildings often brutally erected on pristine landscapes. The eternal conflict between preserving our environment and supporting our growth is something that I see every day in my home of Banks Peninsula where only 1% of it’s original native forests and bush remain due to the land being cleared for housing and farms.
The Beautiful Decay collection is a ongoing photography project in which the images show the natural world often darkened and covered with “man made” straight lines, spray paint, rollers and other effects to give a almost uncomfortable feeling to the viewer.
These photographs are not designed to be “pretty” or soothing, they are to remind us that the world can be dark and gritty but underneath all of the pollution and concrete, there is still beauty and wonder in our decaying natural world, and maybe …..it’s not to late to change.
