After many years of wanting to capture this building, I finally scooped up my camera and ignored the danger signs, jumped the fence and took the short walk down the track from the Godley Head car park. Getting close to the building I could see a couple of guys looking sheepish near the door. Once closer I noticed they had a few drones and cameras also, instant relief! they were only doing what I was doing and they weren’t going to kick me out.
This group of bunkers and gun emplacements remain from WWII when New Zealand was preparing for a Japanese invasion that never came. The buildings overlook the heads of Lyttelton Harbour, the main port of the south island. Recently they found asbestos in the buildings (a common building material of the time) which is highly toxic, so they blocked the tracks leading to the buildings for public safety, but a few signs won’t stop a photographer with a plan in mind.
